Monarch butterfly chrysalis

This image shows the same monarch butterfly chrysalis in 3 stages of development. As it gets closer to the time when the butterfly will emerge the wings get more and more color in them. The wings are very tiny in the chrysalis and when the butterfly emerges it pumps fluid into the wings and they expand to their full size.
